Newspaper Index

Portsmouth (Scioto County) has had a long newspaper history. The first newspaper published in Scioto County was the Portsmouth Gazette in 1818. It was short lived and lasted only about 6 months. Many early newspapers merged or carried additional editions (weekly or daily), some of which was indicated in their name.

Many titles have been microfilmed, but some have not, and those are located at the Ohio Historical Society.
This index covers the newspapers that have been filmed and are located among the Local History Department resources. The years covered are from 1826 to 1865.

The following newspapers were used in this index:

  • The Western Times June 29, 1826 - December 13, 1827
  • The Portsmouth Inquirer April 8, 1850 – April 1, 1853, December 1, 1854 – July 13, 1855
  • The Daily Evening Tribune June 7, 1853 – November 10, 1860
  • The Portsmouth Times September 28, 1858 – December 30, 1865

    Disclaimer: Those researching their genealogy will be familiar with the possibility of misspelled names and inaccurate dates of death, whether by human error in transcribing or the actual newspaper recording. When possible the transcriber mentioned the unknown male or female as a child, if the newspaper reflected it as such. Please remember that in very early newspapers, there is limited information in a death notice. There is not an obituary column as we know it. This is an ongoing project and will be expanded as time and staffing allow.
