Description
The Gilbert Grocery Company was established by Martin B. Gilbert in 1832 at 167 West Front Street. He ran the business until his death in 1887. Mrs. Gilbert and the other partners moved the company to the Damarin building at 199-203 West Front street in 1890. The building shown on the left of this page, at 50-54 West Second (2nd) Street, was built for the Gilbert Grocery Company in 1898. In October 1910 a fire destroyed it. On the right is the new structure at 640-648 Second (2nd) Street which held Gilbert Grocery Company until it closed. West End Electric has been in the building since about 1980.
