The first air base in Amarillo opened in 1942 to train mechanics and engineers and was closed in 1946, after World War II. In 1951, the Amarillo Air Force Base opened. Its name was changed to Amarillo Technical Training Center in 1961, and the base officially closed at the end of 1968. - Creator
