On November 26, 1859 this ad appeared in the Portsmouth Times: "Burton's Exchange, formerly Hotel St. Charles, East Side Market Space, Portsmouth, Ohio. H.D. Burton will be found at the above place, ready to serve his friends and the public with Meals, on call; Oysters, Fish, Birds, Venison, Sardines, &c. FRESH OYSTERS having made arrangements to be supplied with Fresh Oysters, direct from Baltimore, I can supply dealers, parties, and families as cheap as any house west of Baltimore."
