Changes to hoopla Digital
Changes to hoopla Digital
In an effort to continue to provide access to hoopla, Scioto County Public Library is making a change to the number of checkouts a patron may have per month with this digital service. Beginning January 1, 2025, SCPL will decrease the amount of checkouts you can have in one month to from 10 to 6.
Due to hoopla’s popularity, the usage is continuing to climb each month which is significantly increasing the cost to the library. Hoopla charges the library for EACH checkout so the cost of offering this service continues to increase to the point of affecting our budget for all materials including physical books, dvds, magazines and other digital services/products.
In 2024, many Ohio public libraries including Columbus Metropolitan Library and Dayton Metro Library made the decision to stop offering hoopla due to a flawed pricing and lending model causing extreme rises in cost to the point they could no longer afford the service. SCPL is attempting to better manage the cost by decreasing the amount of checkouts instead of having to eliminate hoopla.
FAQs
When will the change take place?
The new limit of 6 will begin on January 1, 2025.
Why the change?
hoopla’s current pricing model charges the library per checkout which can vary greatly in quantity from month to month. This makes budgeting for hoopla unpredictable and, due to its popularity, the library has seen costs rise to an unsustainable amount.
Will Bonus Borrows still be available?
Yes, Bonus Borrows will still be available when offered by hoopla. They will not count against your monthly checkout limit.
I also use Libby/Ohio Digital Library. Will this change affect that service?
No, Libby borrowing is not affected by any changes to hoopla.
